Terracon Announces Topping Out Event for New Headquarters Sept. 5

Company to celebrate construction milestone for $21 million new facility in Olathe

OLATHE, Kan. — Terracon announced it will be “Topping Out” the frame of its new headquarters at 11 a.m., Sept. 5 at its new building site on Ridgeview Avenue north of College Boulevard in Olathe. The milestone comes just a few months after the construction was announced in April 2017.

Terracon  will welcome Olathe Mayor Mike Copeland and other special guests, including city officials and individuals on the design-build team. Terracon employees attending the event will be invited to sign the final structural beam before it is placed on the building.

Expected to be completed in early 2018, the $21 million corporate headquarters building is close to the company’s current location and will accommodate nearly 200 existing employees with room for growth. Terracon will be the sole occupant of the two-story, 65,000-square-foot office building, which will emphasize collaborative spaces including a new training conference center and expanded amenities.

“Terracon’s new headquarters reflects our continued growth strategy, as well as our commitment to remain part of the Olathe business community,” said Swaminathan Srinivasan, Terracon president. “Our goal is to inspire our employees while we focus on our future and serve our clients in new, innovative ways.”

Located in Olathe for more than 10 years, Terracon has consistently demonstrated growth through internal expansion and acquisitions. The new building is being made possible by a successful partnership between Terracon and the City of Olathe, as well as the Kansas Department of Commerce.

The property for Terracon’s new headquarters is being developed by a team led by VanTrust Real Estate. McCownGordon is the general contractor and Finkle + Williams is the architectural firm.

Terracon Partnering with Oklahoma Educators for STEM Teacher Training

Unique Pilot Program Provides Local Teachers with Hands-On Experience

Saadeddine and Pinto in Terracon lab

OKLAHOMA CITY – Terracon, a leading provider of environmental, facilities, geotechnical, and materials services, has partnered with the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) to launch a pilot program that places committed teachers into paid externships in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.

The goal of the program is to provide a professional development opportunity that gives teachers skills and insights to better craft curriculum and inspire students to consider careers in STEM fields. Interested teachers completed an application and chose an externship term, either July 10 – 21, or July 24 – August 4.

“Terracon has always been committed to educating and hiring quality engineers and scientists. In order to have more scientists and engineers in the workforce, we as a scientific community need to promote, excite, and inform both teachers and students to encourage interest in these fields,” said Phil Wood, P.E., senior principal and regional manager for Terracon in Oklahoma City.

Wood explained that by providing the externships, Terracon is helping a few teachers, but more importantly, setting a precedent for other companies to proactively reach out to students and teachers. Two teachers from the middle school through high school levels work at the lab and offices of Terracon’s Oklahoma City location during each externship term. The teachers shadow Terracon employees and even conduct their own testing and sampling of soil samples, for example.

The idea for the summer teacher externship grew from conversations Wood had with Robyn Miller, Ed.D., who is deputy superintendent for educator effectiveness and policy research with the OSDE. They discussed the need for teachers of STEM-related subjects to understand what is involved in working in a scientific or engineering business.

“Our Teacher Shortage Task Force discussions have led us to piloting this valuable partnership with Terracon,” said Miller. “We frequently hear from businesses willing to contribute to the retention of Oklahoma teachers, but they are unsure exactly how to provide rich experiences that will ultimately benefit students as they prepare for the postsecondary path of their choice.”

To address that issue, Miller said the OSDE prepared a toolkit including an externship application, sample schedule, suggested compensation and the applicability of the externship in these teachers’ classrooms.

“From this experience – which we hope will inspire other businesses to establish similar externship programs — teachers will be better able to expose their students to STEM-related fields and help them achieve their aspirations for the future,” Miller said.

The partnership between Terracon and OSDE will potentially be used as a template for future professional development models to help teachers gain firsthand knowledge of how companies are using the engineering design process and 21st century skills to be competitive in the workforce.
