HARRISBURG, PA. — Skelly and Loy, Inc., A Terracon Company, (Skelly and Loy) announces the 2025 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence was awarded for the Valley Green Run Restoration and Pedestrian Bridge Project, led by Friends of the Wissahickon and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation.
The Valley Green Run Restoration and Pedestrian Bridge is a sustainable project that included 201 feet of stream restoration on Valley Green Run, construction of a stunning 200-foot ADA-compliant pedestrian bridge, and the planting of more than 200 native shrubs. By reducing over 23,000 pounds of sediment pollutants per year and enhancing aquatic, riparian, and terrestrial habitat, the project sets a new standard for sustainability, access, and community partnership in Wissahickon Valley Park.
Skelly and Loy led and managed the design-build project which included planning, design, and construction of the stream restoration, a new elevated pedestrian bridge, stormwater management improvements, and a new trailhead. The stream restoration resulted in a stable, flood tolerant stream channel that withstands heavy stormflow events, while the trailhead and pedestrian bridge provide a safe, welcoming, and robust path for heavy park visitation (~1,500 daily). The project has improved Philadelphia’s drinking water quality as Valley Green Run is a tributary to Wissahickon Creek, which contributes drinking water to 1 in 3 Philadelphians.
“This achievement is a testament to what can be accomplished when dedicated partners come together with a shared vision for restoration, accessibility, and stewardship,” said Michael Lower, P.E., engineering department manager at Skelly and Loy. “We are proud to set a new benchmark for sustainability and community partnership — and it inspires us to keep protecting these special places for generations to come.”
