San Diego (March 2025) — Environmental Business Journal®* (EBJ), an independent business research publication that has provided strategic market intelligence to the environmental industry since 1988, has honored Terracon with multiple awards for 2024, including two Business Achievement awards from EBJ and one Business Achievement award from the Climate Change Business Journal (CCBJ).

“In another year of strong growth for the environmental industry in 2024, a number of companies set themselves apart with their growth, innovation, M&A, or signature projects that merit the special recognition of an EBJ award. With traditional environmental markets in infrastructure, air quality, remediation, water, and wastewater, as well as energy transition and climate resilience, it is understandable that companies report growing demand for environmental technology and services,” said Grant Ferrier, editor of Environmental Business Journal and chair of the EBJ Business Achievement Award selection committee.

Terracon was recognized with EBJ awards for Social Contribution: Terracon Foundation; and Mergers & Acquisitions; in addition to one CCBJ award for Advancing Best Practices: Emissions Reduction.

“Terracon is honored to be recognized by EBJ and CCBJ for the outstanding work we’re providing our clients and for our contributions to our communities,” said Mark White, P.G., Environmental assistant service line director at Terracon. “As employee-owners, we are always looking for innovative ways to improve how we serve our clients, care for each other and the environment, and give back to our communities while living our company values.”

Social Contribution

Terracon Foundation demonstrated exceptional commitment to employee engagement in philanthropic projects and fundraising partnerships throughout 2024. The foundation awarded $500,000 to organizations that advance the firm’s core mission of supporting education, the built and natural environment, and equity while fostering a culture of giving among employees. Terracon approved a landmark grant of $26,000 to the AIHA Foundation (AIHF) to establish the Women in Industrial Hygiene-Terracon Leadership Scholarship. Once finalized, this endowed scholarship will award $1,000 per year to undergraduates, graduates, and professionals in the industrial hygiene (IH) space who have advanced women’s leadership in the IH profession. The first scholarship will be announced at AIHA Connect 2025, and the endowed nature of the scholarship should allow one award per year in perpetuity. This endowment underscores Terracon’s commitment to increasing diversity in the AEC industry and reinforces its mission of supporting education.

Mergers and Acquisitions

True to its strategic plan, Terracon successfully expanded its capabilities and market presence by acquiring four specialized environmental firms in 2024, demonstrating dynamic acquisition leadership:

  • Sage Environmental, enhancing its environmental services in the Northeast with 33 employees and specialized remedial injections, environmental drilling, and comprehensive environmental assessments.
  • Harbor Environmental, a multidisciplinary firm based in Little Rock, Arkansas with 38 employees joining Terracon, bolstering its engineering, compliance, and sustainability services.
  • Flat Earth Archeology of Cabot, Arkansas, adding 11 employees and expanding environmental planning and cultural resources. Flat Earth’s expertise in archaeology and cultural resource management (CRM) complemented Terracon’s existing operations in Arkansas and surrounding regions.
  • Metcalf Archaeological Consultants, a firm specializing in cultural resource management services in the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains, adding 72 employees with expertise in archaeology, architectural history, and software applications.

Advancing Best Practices: Emissions Reduction

Terracon

In 2024, Terracon worked with the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) to prepare their implementation grant application for EPA’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grant program. EPA awarded SRPMIC $9.8 million to fund the following emissions reduction measures to guide sustainable future development, promote climate resilience, and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 117,000 mtCO2e by 2030 and 677,000 mtCO2e by 2050.

Renewable Energy/Low-carbon Power

  • Utilize landfill gas to produce renewable natural gas (RNG) and avoid flaring.
  • Fleet vehicle electrification and installation of charging stations.
  • Facilitate free home energy assessments for SRPMIC residents.
  • Voucher program to exchange gas-powered lawn and garden equipment for electric alternatives.

Carbon Sequestration and Sustainable Development

  • Implementation of a land buy-back program to preserve natural spaces and enhance carbon sequestration.
  • Large-scale tree planting program to enhance air quality and carbon sequestration.
  • Improvements to soil management to implement sustainable agriculture practices.

For each measure, Terracon analyzed the magnitude of emissions reductions, calculated their cost-effectiveness, and developed an action plan to support measure durability. Additionally, Terracon prepared the Technical Appendix, detailing the methodology used to calculate emissions reductions from each measure, providing SRPMIC with a comprehensive and technically sound basis for their application.

The 2024 EBJ awards will be presented live and in-person at the EBJ Business Achievement Awards banquet at Environmental Industry Summit XXIII on April 2-4, 2025 in San Diego, along with CCBJ Business Achievement, Lifetime Achievement and 50-Year Company anniversary awards.
