Terracon provided geotechnical design and construction inspection services for Cosmopolitan Resort and Casino project, a $1.5-billion development located on Las Vegas Boulevard. The site will have twin high-rise towers, retail structures, and below grade parking. Foundations consist of extensive use of ground improvements, by more than 1400 Micropile type ground improvement bars extending 120 to 200 feet below original grade. Terracon performed structural steel fabrication shop testing and inspection services at the Schuff Steel fabrication shop located in Ottawa, Kan. Terracon's structural inspectors monitored fabrication of the structural steel framing members to verify the fabricator was following shop quality procedures and code requirements. Terracon also verified the material used for the project was the correct grade and collected traceable mill test reports. Services also included visually inspecting 100 percent of the fabrication welds, testing 10 percent of all welds using magnetic particle, and testing0 100 percent of all partial and complete penetration groove welds using ultrasonic testing. Terracon brought rejectable indications to the attention of Schuff's quality control personnel. The fabrication shop made the appropriate repairs and Terracon performed the required retests. All observation and testing services adhered to the AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code. These highly specialized tests were performed by personnel certified by the American Welding Society (AWS) and the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT).
