Terracon's Minneapolis office opened its doors in 1988. The office started out providing environmental services and now provides a full range of geotechnical and construction materials engineering and testing, along with environmental consulting services. The office serves many national clients that are in Minnesota. They have also held a contract with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) for 15 years to provide services on abandoned sites with environmental impacts that present a risk to human health and/or the environment. To date, the MPCA is the 3rd largest client for the company.
Terracon provided environmental site assessments, geotechnical engineering design services, and construction materials engineering and testing and observations for an ethanol production facility constructed in Janesville, Minn. Construction began in 2006. Structures associated with the facility will include high-capacity grain storage silos, steel storage and fermentation tanks, process building, slab storage areas, railroad spur, and roadways.
Terracon was selected to provide consulting services on a groundwater plume constituting the Baytown Groundwater Contamination Site Superfund site. The site contains a groundwater plume contaminated with trichloroethylene (TCE). The plume was present east of the town of Lake Elmo, Minn., and extended eastward beyond the Lake Elmo Airport towards the St. Croix River. Up to 200 residential wells were impacted and have to be put on carbon treatment systems to provide acceptable drinking water. Terracon performed construction materials engineering and testing and Special Inspections for the Walgreen's located at County Road C and Rice Street in Roseville, Minn. Terracon's services included soil corrections with field soil density testing of sand backfill for depths of up to 10 feet. Terracon's recommendations for soil corrections saved the developer in excess of $15,000. Due to moisture conditions beneath the slab-on-grade, Terracon made recommendations to reduce the humidity within the building, drawing out moisture from below the slab-on-grade, which ultimately resulted in the…
