Terracon provided environmental consulting services for American Electric Power (AEP) related to the installation of new 138kV electric transmission and fiber optic cables between the Gila Substation and transition structures at the CITGO refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas. The project involved horizontal directional drilling (HDD) techniques under the Ship Channel.  Project tasks included the removal of an existing high-pressure fluid-filled (HPFF) cable and the abatement and demolition of an existing Pump House at the Gila Substation.  There were a number of special requirements related to the jobsite, which is immediately adjacent to the Corpus Christi Ship Channel on one side and Nueces Bay on the other, both environmentally sensitive areas.  During construction, Terracon also provide on-site environmental monitoring using field instrumentation and sampling techniques. Potential contaminants of concern included TPH, metals, PCBs, Silicone Oil, VOCs, lead-based paint and asbestos.
