Brownfields Assessment and CleanupGeolocation: 37.1512, -88.732

The shell of the former Laidlaw facility, a former industrial supplier to the dry cleaning industry, is highly visible from the main route through downtown Metropolis. A cluster of decaying, abandoned buildings behind a chain-link and barbed wire fence, the site detracted from the beauty of the adjoining Fort Massac State Park and impacts the quality of life for the low-income, multi-family housing across the street. Since 2005, Terracon has helped the city obtain funding to address the site, and is currently completing an innovative cleanup of soil and groundwater contaminated with perchloroethylene, its breakdown products, and lead.
