BONNER SPRINGS, Kan. — The Terracon Foundation recently awarded a $2,500 community grant to Bonner Springs Elementary School that will be used to improve the school’s Outdoor Learning Area for future teaching opportunities, performances, and community meetings.

Terracon Foundation community grants support local nonprofit programs that Terracon employees are actively involved with, in the communities where they live and work.

Bonner Springs Elementary provides education to more than 450 students from grades pre-kindergarten to fifth grade. The mission of the school is to provide a safe and positive educational environment that promotes learning, literacy, technology, and respect for children and their community.

Cherie Raygoza, employee development and wellbeing specialist in the Terracon corporate office in Olathe, is involved with the school and presented the grant. Kim Mitchell, principal of Bonner Springs Elementary, accepted the grant and explained more about its use.

“Our Outdoor Learning Area came about as part of our wellness initiative,” Mitchell said. “We are now at the point where we are planning our seating and landscaping. Our goal is to hold a ribbon cutting ceremony in May 2014.”

In addition to the Terracon Foundation grant, Mitchell added that the project was a team effort between a school counselors, teachers, instructors at Kansas State University, and Lowe’s to build an area that would meet all of the school’s needs. Terracon employee, Raygoza emphasized the importance of the school to her family and the community.

“Bonner Springs Elementary is not just a school, it is a part of my family’s history and future,” Raygoza said. “The school is important to the growth and development of our children and it is our responsibility to help provide the resources to make them successful.”
