Terracon was selected to provide consulting services on a groundwater plume constituting the Baytown Groundwater Contamination Site Superfund site. The site contains a groundwater plume contaminated with trichloroethylene (TCE). The plume was present east of the town of Lake Elmo, Minn., and extended eastward beyond the Lake Elmo Airport towards the St. Croix River. Up to 200 residential wells were impacted and have to be put on carbon treatment systems to provide acceptable drinking water. Assessment activities were necessary to protect human health and the environment surrounding the site. To date, the source of the TCE contamination was unknown. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency jointly oversee the project.
