IHI Environmental, a Terracon Company (IHI), has supported the activities of the State of Utah, Division of Facilities Construction and Management (DFCM), by providing industrial hygiene, occupational safety, and environmental consulting services since 1985. IHI has conducted asbestos and hazardous materials surveys for over 100 state buildings, including comprehensive pre-renovation surveys at the State Office Building and the Utah State Capitol Building. IHI also designed and managed the removal of 120,000 square feet of asbestos-containing material from the State Office Building without displacing building occupants. This project included the installation of a specifically designed ventilation system to maintain air quality standards and prevent potential employee exposures. Throughout the course of this project, IHI worked closely with DFCM, an architectural and engineering firm, and a number of contractors to keep the project on schedule and successful. In addition, as part of a state rehabilitation program, IHI trained an asbestos abatement crew of state prison inmates to perform removal operations. IHI has performed hazardous materials survey and assessment services in over 50 buildings at various colleges and universities throughout Utah as part of a statewide DFCM initiative to characterize asbestos-containing materials, lead-based paint, and other hazardous materials in all higher learning institutions. IHI developed a database to categorize and present the extensive amount of information gathered during the surveys. Using this database, the client can choose among eight different presentation formats to obtain data regarding each material type and its location in each building. IHI has also conducted other industrial hygiene consulting services for the State of Utah that have included indoor air quality investigations, employee chemical hazard assessments, the implementation of hazard communication plans, exposure monitoring, and mold mitigation and remediation design. In addition, IHI has performed environmental consulting services for the State that have included Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, hazardous materials management, underground storage tank removal, and spill remediation.
