To fulfill their goal to be seen as more than a hospital and to build a network of healthcare facilities and providers working to exceed expectations in delivering quality care, Shawnee Mission Health (SMH) chose a location in southern Overland Park, Kansas to build their new Blue Valley Campus that will house an emergency department, imaging center and laboratory. The new buildings will collectively create a campus-like environment with proportions and scale to the surrounding community. Terracon was retained by the client because we were familiar with the geological and geotechnical conditions at the site. We initially explored areas of this site in 2006 for a contemplated professional soccer league stadium and surrounding field complex, which did not materialize. We next explored areas for planned residential and commercial developments, which also never proceeded. SMH retained Terracon in 2008 to study conditions in anticipation of their future development of this site for a new hospital. In 2015, Terracon was retained by HKS Architects to conduct another comprehensive field exploration of subsurface conditions. Jacobs was hired by SMH to facilitate the coordination of the parties involved in Phase I of the project construction. Jacobs hired Terracon after a competitive bid process to perform materials testing services for the project. Terracon was selected due to our knowledge of the job site, great working relationship with the parties that were involved, and competitive schedule and pricing.
