North Kansas City Hospital has invested $18 million in its emergency room (ER) expansion to serve the North Kansas City community better. With over 10,000 square feet of additional space, the ER now encompasses 30,000 square feet, increasing capacity from 65,000 to 80,000 emergency visits a year. The new design allows more space and privacy in each of the 42 rooms, including three trauma rooms. The expansion enhances the Hospital’s existing Level II trauma center services and brings additional care and convenience to patients and families. Terracon provided materials observation and testing services for the North Kansas City Hospital Emergency Expansion project. Terracon’s materials observation and testing services included: placement of reinforced concrete, placement of reinforcing steel, verification of soils, drilled piers or piles, high strength bolting, sprayed fire resistant materials, testing of reinforced concrete, bolts installed in concrete, excavation and filling, structural welding and steel frame inspection. Terracon’s relationship with North Kansas City Hospital goes back as far as 1990 when we performed materials testing and inspections for the Patient Tower Addition. Since then, we have also performed geotechnical and materials testing services for their parking lot, parking garage, child care center, and several other additions to the hospital.
