In 2003, plans began for New Hampshire's first utility-scale wind farm in Lempster. The wind farm went online in 2008 and has 12 wind turbines with a combined capacity of 24 megawatts and an annual production of more than 70,000 megawatt hours. The project provides electricity to the region through the Public Service of New Hampshire grid.
Terracon was hired to develop and complete a geotechnical investigation. 27 test borings were advanced at proposed locations of wind turbines, a meteorology tower, operation and maintenance buildings, and along proposed roadways, utilizing all-terrain vehicle drill rigs.
Foundation design parameters for the wind turbines were provided for both soil and bedrock, and recommendations were made for mat foundations and rock anchors. Seismic criteria and lateral loading design recommendations were also addressed in the geotechnical report.
