Terracon provided environmental, geotechnical and construction monitoring services for the 104,000 square-foot Kroger plus fueling station in Madison, Mississippi. The project began with Terracon providing asbestos specifications prior to the demolition of the original 54,000 sq ft Kroger on site. A Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) was conducted to identify possible recognized environmental conditions (RECs) in connection with the site. Based on the geotechnical investigation results, Terracon provided recommendations relative to soil and groundwater conditions; site preparation; foundation design and construction; seismic considerations; and pavement design. An REC discovered in the Phase I ESA, and odors detected in the geotechnical investigation, lead Terracon to perform a Phase II ESA and an Additional Subsurface Investigation (ASI). The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) issued "No Further Action" on the site, and the project resumed. Terracon also provided construction monitoring and materials testing of soils, concrete, pavement and steel during construction. The store, the largest Kroger in the state, opened October 2011.
