WPC, A Terracon Company (WPC) has provided subsurface exploration, engineering consulting, and laboratory testing on the widening and construction of frontage roadways for approximately three miles of interstate highway in 2008. WPC performed extensive subsurface exploration including auger borings, standard penetration test (SPT) soil borings, cone penetration test (CPT) soundings, and flat blade dilatometer test (DMT) soundings to define the subsurface soil and groundwater conditions, to determine the general descriptive relative density and consistency of the subsurface soils; and to obtain soil samples for examination, classification, and laboratory testing. Laboratory testing performed on representative soil/rock samples included moisture content, grain size analysis, Atterberg Limits, organic content, limerock bearing ratio, consolidation, unconfined compressive strength, and corrosion properties. We provided recommendations for the roadway widening, deep foundations for bridge widening, MSE wall construction, stormwater retention ponds, high mast light structures, and overhead sign structures. We also provided exploration and recommendations for construction of the roadway embankment over an area of deep organic soils located at the Ortega River Bridge.
