Terracon was retained by the client to perform construction materials testing for a 297,246-square-foot FedEx Ground Distribution Center located on a 46.19-acre parcel. The project also included a 5,180-square foot vehicle maintenance garage, 1,889-square-foot gateway building, and approximately 750,000 square-feet of asphalt and concrete pavement. Terracon was awarded the project based on an existing relationship with the client (general contractor).
Prior to construction, Terracon was requested to perform an asphalt and concrete pavement evaluation to analyze the minimum pavement sections defined in the plans and specifications. Terracon was provided with a traffic loading spreadsheet and performed an analysis indicating that the defined sections were adequate.
Terracon’s construction material testing services consisted of concrete, soil, and asphalt testing and inspections in addition to structural steel inspections. In addition, Terracon provided field density testing and earthwork recommendations for the required mass grading which consisted of approximately 7 feet of fill for the building pad and approximately 5 feet of fill for the driveway/parking areas. The client requested Terracon work closely with the earthwork subcontractor to limit delays due to poor weather during construction of the building pad. Terracon directed scarification and re-compaction efforts, in lieu of undercutting and replacement, following severe rain events which assisted in limiting delays.
Throughout the project, Terracon participated in on-site meetings to discuss project items/recommendations and familiarize Terracon technicians with site and project requirements and potential safety issues. Terracon utilized its Construction Materials Engineering and Laboratory Management System (CMELMSTM) to provide quick turnaround times on testing and inspection reports in addition to tracking deviations and project budget. Services to date have been completed on schedule and within the anticipated budget.
