The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) developed its South Corridor Light Rail (Blue Line) as the first node in a multi-line system of light rail and commuter rail service. The Blue Line Extension (BLE) is nearly 11 miles long, with 13 stations both elevated and at-grade, and six single-span and eight multi-span bridges, one 300 foot underpass, two 1,000 vehicle parking decks and a vehicle maintenance facility. Terracon's scope of work included obtaining general geotechnical information regarding the subsurface conditions within the areas of the proposed construction through the use of conventional soil test borings, rock corings, electro-piezocone penetrometers (CPT's), dilatometer testing (DMT's) and multi-array of surface wave (MASW) testing. Foundation recommendations for deep and shallow foundation elements, lateral load analysis, global stability analysis for MSE wall structures, site seismicity evaluations, pavement designs and site grading recommendations were included.
