The Birmingham office was hired in 2009 to provide geotechnical engineering services totaling close to $94,000 for the terminal modernization at the Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport. The project, scheduled to begin construction in early 2011, consists of an approximately 87,250 square foot addition to the existing terminal as well as an expansion of the existing apron, a new fuel farm, and elevator additions for the parking deck. Services provided by Terracon included the drilling of 50 SPT and rock core borings and preparation of geotechnical recommendations for earthwork, shallow and deep foundations, and heavy duty pavement. In addition to a tight schedule, this project presented several unique challenges due to the field work being performed in and around an active airfield. Close coordination was required between Terracon, the Birmingham Airport Authority, and the FAA for all phases of work. Furthermore, a large percentage of the work was required to be performed at night.
