Interstate 73 will be a new highway that is planned to run from Michigan to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This study area was divided into two projects, a North and a South. The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is in the process of developing Right-of-Way Plans for the Southern Section for approximately 43 miles. The project has been subdivided into three segments A, B, and C. Terracon was retained by the lead design/consulting firm to provide geotechnical services for segments A (18 miles) and C (15 miles). The Saluda Dam impounds Lake Murray, which is one of the largest lakes on the east coast of the United States. The Dam is an earthen embankment completed in 1930 as part of a 206-Mv hydroelectric facility and is thereby under jurisdiction of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). A coal fired electric facility (McMeekin Station) is also located near the downstream toe of the Dam. Terracon was selected by Salem Leasing Corporation to clean up the truck leasing and maintenance facility in Columbia, SC. The environmental remediation contract was funded by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) under the SUPERB pay-for-performance (PFP) program.
