Saluda Dam Remediation

Columbia, South Carolina

Due to a directive from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the South Carolina Electric & Gas Company began remedial design work for seismic loading conditions. Remediation consisted of constructing a combination roller compacted concrete (RCC) and rockfill berms along the downstream toe of the existing dam. At the time, the project was the largest active dam construction in the United States involving approximately 1.4 million cubic yards of RCC and 3.5 million cubic yards of rockfill. Terracon was selected by the design team, Paul C. Rizzo and Associates, to support filed and laboratory quality control testing of the RCC and rockfill. PCRA also contracted Terracon to support their geotechnical instrumentation procurement, installation and data acquisition systems activities.
